NFL Power Rankings Week 2: Bills No. 1, Bears Rocket to No. 7

10 min read

Buffalo is Football Nation’s new No. 1 team after a 36-31 road win over Houston, but the more revealing Week 1 statement came from the middle of the board. San Francisco crushed the preseason No. 1 Rams, Chicago scored 59, Minnesota buried Green Bay and Jacksonville gave Trevor Lawrence a four touchdown platform. Those results force meaningful movement without pretending one game has answered every roster question.

This ranking uses every completed Week 1 result, official Week 2 pairings, opponent quality, point margin, turnover performance, situational execution, roster strength and confirmed injury information available Tuesday morning. Movement is measured from Football Nation’s last complete 32 team preseason ranking, so several shifts are larger than they will be later in the season.

How to read the movement

A team’s Week 1 result matters, but not in isolation. Beating an established contender carries more weight than handling a bottom tier opponent. A narrow loss can strengthen a résumé when the opponent is elite, while a win built almost entirely on nonrepeatable turnovers receives less credit. The ranking also distinguishes a confirmed injury from an unresolved availability question. The next official injury reports are the checkpoint, not speculation.

Football Nation NFL Power Rankings: Week 2

1. Buffalo Bills (1-0) | Previous: 3 | Up 2

Latest result: beat Houston 36-31. Strength: Josh Allen drove an offense that produced 409 yards and 7.9 yards per play against a playoff caliber opponent. Concern: The defense surrendered 31 points and allowed Houston to stay ahead deep into the fourth quarter. Next opponent: Detroit at home on Thursday night.

Buffalo’s place at the top is an evidence based reward, not a permanent crown. The Bills beat the strongest opponent faced by any team in this top tier and did it with a late, high leverage answer.

2. Baltimore Ravens (1-0) | Previous: 4 | Up 2

Latest result: beat Indianapolis 41-23. Strength: Baltimore paired Lamar Jackson’s stress on a defense with Derrick Henry’s power and posted the week’s cleanest contender level road win. Concern: The receiver injury picture needs another official report before the offense can be treated as fully intact. Next opponent: New Orleans at home.

3. San Francisco 49ers (1-0) | Previous: 6 | Up 3

Latest result: beat the Rams 27-7 in Melbourne. Strength: San Francisco controlled the line of scrimmage, protected the goal line and turned a major international opener into a one sided statement. Concern: Rookie defensive back Sebastian Stribling’s ankle injury reduces secondary depth entering Week 2. Next opponent: Miami at home.

4. Seattle Seahawks (1-0) | Previous: 2 | Down 2

Latest result: beat New England 13-10. Strength: Three interceptions and late defensive poise carried Seattle through a low scoring game. Concern: The offense managed only 13 points, while Sam Darnold’s reported soft tissue injury makes quarterback availability the week’s defining checkpoint. Next opponent: Arizona on the road.

5. Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) | Previous: 9 | Up 4

Latest result: beat Denver 31-10. Strength: Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker gave Kansas City balance, and the Chiefs separated decisively after halftime. Concern: One dominant divisional win does not erase every preseason question about pass catcher health and offensive consistency. Next opponent: Indianapolis at home.

6. Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) | Previous: 5 | Down 1

Latest result: beat Washington 24-22. Strength: Jalen Hurts accounted for three touchdowns and Philadelphia created enough explosive offense to survive a serious divisional test. Concern: Washington owned long stretches of possession, and the Eagles did not put the game away when they had opportunities. Next opponent: Tennessee on the road.

7. Chicago Bears (1-0) | Previous: 18 | Up 11

Latest result: beat Carolina 59-37. Strength: Chicago delivered the highest scoring performance of Week 1 and showed a ceiling few teams matched. Concern: Allowing 37 points keeps the defense from sharing the offense’s instant contender grade. Next opponent: Minnesota at home.

8. Detroit Lions (1-0) | Previous: 7 | Down 1

Latest result: beat New Orleans 31-30 in overtime. Strength: Jahmyr Gibbs and Detroit’s skill group produced when the game demanded late answers. Concern: Needing overtime to escape New Orleans exposed more defensive volatility than the roster’s top tier reputation suggests. Next opponent: Buffalo on the road Thursday night.

9. Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) | Previous: 12 | Up 3

Latest result: beat Tampa Bay 33-27. Strength: Cincinnati forced four fumbles and converted the extra possessions into a useful road victory. Concern: Turnover takeaways can fluctuate, and the Bengals still allowed 27 points. Next opponent: Houston on the road.

10. Minnesota Vikings (1-0) | Previous: 19 | Up 9

Latest result: beat Green Bay 39-22. Strength: A 29 point scoring avalanche turned a rivalry game into one of the week’s most forceful wins. Concern: The next test is proving that quarterback execution and offensive health hold up away from the opener’s momentum. Next opponent: Chicago on the road.

11. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) | Previous: 16 | Up 5

Latest result: beat Cleveland 34-10. Strength: Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdowns and Jacksonville dominated both the scoreboard and the game’s emotional temperature. Concern: Cleveland’s offensive instability limits how far one blowout can move the Jaguars. Next opponent: Denver on the road.

12. Los Angeles Rams (0-1) | Previous: 1 | Down 11

Latest result: lost to San Francisco 27-7. Strength: The Rams still possess the roster architecture and coaching history of a contender. Concern: The offense generated only seven points, and Myles Garrett’s knee surgery plus an injured reserve absence creates a major defensive problem. Next opponent: the Giants at home Monday night.

13. Houston Texans (0-1) | Previous: 13 | No change

Latest result: lost to Buffalo 36-31. Strength: Houston produced 381 yards and 26 first downs against the new No. 1 team and led late. Concern: The defense allowed 7.9 yards per play and could not close the door on Buffalo’s winning drive. Next opponent: Cincinnati at home.

14. Arizona Cardinals (1-0) | Previous: 28 | Up 14

Latest result: beat the Chargers 26-14. Strength: Arizona controlled a respected opponent and paired a clean offensive plan with a defense that allowed only 14 points. Concern: The Cardinals must reproduce the performance against a divisional opponent before the jump becomes stable. Next opponent: Seattle at home.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) | Previous: 17 | Up 2

Latest result: beat Atlanta 20-13. Strength: T.J. Watt’s interception return touchdown showed how Pittsburgh’s defense can change a game without offensive permission. Concern: The offense scored only 13 points of its own and cannot depend on defensive touchdowns every week. Next opponent: New England on the road.

16. New York Giants (1-0) | Previous: 25 | Up 9

Latest result: beat Dallas 28-20. Strength: Jaxson Dart made decisive throws and New York finished a rivalry win with composure. Concern: The offense must show the same efficiency against a Rams defense entering Week 2 with urgency. Next opponent: the Rams on the road Monday night.

17. Las Vegas Raiders (1-0) | Previous: 27 | Up 10

Latest result: beat Miami 27-13. Strength: Ashton Jeanty and Klint Kubiak’s offense supplied a physical identity while the defense controlled the game. Concern: Miami’s rough opener means the Raiders still need proof against a stronger opponent. Next opponent: the Chargers on the road.

18. Los Angeles Chargers (0-1) | Previous: 11 | Down 7

Latest result: lost to Arizona 26-14. Strength: Omarion Hampton and the roster’s premium talent keep the Chargers from a steeper fall. Concern: A 14 point opener and Ladd McConkey’s rib issue create immediate concern about explosive passing volume. Next opponent: Las Vegas at home.

19. New York Jets (1-0) | Previous: 31 | Up 12

Latest result: beat Tennessee 23-10. Strength: Breece Hall and a disciplined defense gave the Jets a repeatable formula. Concern: Tennessee finished Week 1 at No. 32 here, so the opponent adjustment matters. Next opponent: Green Bay at home.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1) | Previous: 20 | No change

Latest result: lost to Cincinnati 33-27. Strength: Tampa Bay remained dangerous despite losing the turnover battle and had a real chance late. Concern: Four fumbles were too much self inflicted damage to survive. Next opponent: Cleveland at home.

21. Green Bay Packers (0-1) | Previous: 8 | Down 13

Latest result: lost to Minnesota 39-22. Strength: Green Bay still flashed explosive scoring ability before the game broke open. Concern: The defense and ball security collapsed during Minnesota’s decisive surge. Next opponent: the Jets on the road.

22. Dallas Cowboys (0-1) | Previous: 15 | Down 7

Latest result: lost to the Giants 28-20. Strength: Dallas has enough established playmakers to create takeaways and recover quickly. Concern: Dak Prescott’s costly interception and defensive breakdowns decided a divisional game the Cowboys could not afford to waste. Next opponent: Washington at home.

23. Washington Commanders (0-1) | Previous: 23 | No change

Latest result: lost to Philadelphia 24-22. Strength: Washington sustained drives, protected the football and pushed a top six opponent to the final possession. Concern: The defense surrendered the decisive explosive plays and left no margin for the offense. Next opponent: Dallas on the road.

24. New England Patriots (0-1) | Previous: 14 | Down 10

Latest result: lost to Seattle 13-10. Strength: New England’s defense kept the game within one possession from start to finish. Concern: Three interceptions and Brown’s reported high ankle sprain leave a thin passing game under immediate stress. Next opponent: Pittsburgh at home.

25. New Orleans Saints (0-1) | Previous: 26 | Up 1

Latest result: lost to Detroit 31-30 in overtime. Strength: New Orleans generated 30 points and proved it could trade punches with a top ten opponent. Concern: The defense could not finish the upset after the offense created a winning position. Next opponent: Baltimore on the road.

26. Atlanta Falcons (0-1) | Previous: 24 | Down 2

Latest result: lost to Pittsburgh 20-13. Strength: Atlanta’s defense allowed only 13 offensive points and kept the game close. Concern: A defensive touchdown against the offense exposed the exact turnover risk that can erase an otherwise competitive day. Next opponent: Carolina at home.

27. Indianapolis Colts (0-1) | Previous: 21 | Down 6

Latest result: lost to Baltimore 41-23. Strength: Indianapolis reached 23 points and showed enough offensive fight to avoid a total washout. Concern: The defense could not contain Baltimore’s run and quarterback stress package. Next opponent: Kansas City on the road.

28. Denver Broncos (0-1) | Previous: 10 | Down 18

Latest result: lost to Kansas City 31-10. Strength: Evan Engram’s touchdown offered one useful red zone connection to build around. Concern: Denver committed costly turnovers, scored only 10 points and could not slow Kansas City after halftime. Next opponent: Jacksonville at home.

29. Cleveland Browns (0-1) | Previous: 29 | No change

Latest result: lost to Jacksonville 34-10. Strength: The defense still contains individual talent capable of improving the weekly floor. Concern: The offense is reviewing its quarterback direction after Deshaun Watson’s ineffective opener. Next opponent: Tampa Bay on the road.

30. Miami Dolphins (0-1) | Previous: 30 | No change

Latest result: lost to Las Vegas 27-13. Strength: Miami’s return game supplied a spark and the skill group retains theoretical speed. Concern: The offense allowed five sacks and never established enough rhythm to threaten the Raiders. Next opponent: San Francisco on the road.

31. Carolina Panthers (0-1) | Previous: 22 | Down 9

Latest result: lost to Chicago 59-37. Strength: Scoring 37 points shows the offense has legitimate playmakers and comeback capacity. Concern: No team can survive a defense that concedes 59, regardless of offensive volume. Next opponent: Atlanta on the road.

32. Tennessee Titans (0-1) | Previous: 32 | No change

Latest result: lost to the Jets 23-10. Strength: The defense kept the game from becoming a runaway. Concern: Ten points against a rebuilding opponent left no evidence that the offense can support the defense. Next opponent: Philadelphia at home.

Biggest risers

Arizona climbs 14 places after beating the Chargers by 12. The Jets rise 12 after a controlled two score win. Chicago jumps 11 because 59 points demands respect even with the defensive caveat. Las Vegas rises 10, while Minnesota and the Giants each move nine. These are not declarations that every riser is suddenly a contender. They are the proper reward for producing better Week 1 evidence than the teams around them.

Biggest fallers

Denver drops 18 places after a 31-10 divisional loss erased its preseason top ten position. Green Bay falls 13 because Minnesota’s surge exposed problems on both sides of the ball. The Rams fall 11 after scoring seven in Melbourne and losing Myles Garrett to injured reserve. New England drops 10 after a three interception defeat and a major receiver injury, while Carolina falls nine because allowing 59 overwhelms the offense’s 37 point output.

The bubble: teams 16 through 20

The Giants, Raiders and Jets all won, but the quality and repeatability of those wins remain open questions. The Chargers own more established roster talent than their No. 18 position suggests, yet their 14 point opener cannot be ignored. Tampa Bay lost but remained competitive despite four fumbles. This group is the most volatile part of the ranking because Week 2 presents immediate résumé tests: Giants at Rams, Raiders at Chargers, Packers at Jets and Browns at Buccaneers.

Four ranking debates that matter

Rams at No. 12: dropping the preseason leader this far is aggressive, but seven points and a major defensive injury are real evidence. Bears at No. 7: Chicago’s offense earned the leap, while the 37 points allowed cap the ceiling. Seahawks at No. 4: the defense is top tier, but quarterback health and a 13 point output prevent No. 1 consideration. Texans at No. 13: Houston is the highest ranked winless team because a five point loss to Buffalo included 381 yards, 26 first downs and a late lead.

Football Nation conclusion

Week 1 did not settle the league. It did establish a new burden of proof. Buffalo owns the best combination of opponent quality and winning execution. Baltimore and San Francisco supplied the cleanest statements behind the Bills. Chicago, Arizona and Minnesota forced the league to revisit its assumptions. Denver, Green Bay and the Rams must now answer their worst opening questions immediately.

The next checkpoint is the complete Week 2 injury cycle, beginning with Detroit at Buffalo on Thursday and ending with Giants at Rams on Monday night. The most important ranking swing is already scheduled: Buffalo can validate No. 1 against Detroit, while the Rams have a standalone chance to prove that Melbourne was an outlier.
