NFL Power Rankings Week 5: 49ers Take No. 1, Bills Fall

12 min read

San Francisco takes Football Nation's No. 1 spot entering Week 5. The 49ers are the only team combining a 4 and 0 record with a plus 58 point differential, league leading yards per play and league leading third down efficiency. Kansas City and Minnesota remain unbeaten, while Jacksonville and Chicago complete the top five after evidence driven Week 4 wins.

This ranking was checked Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at 7:01 a.m. Central after every Week 4 game was final. Movement is measured from Football Nation's Week 4 power rankings. Official records, results, points for, points against and Week 5 opponents come from the NFL. TeamRankings supplied the 2026 yards per play, third down, red zone, turnover margin and sack rate comparisons cited below.

How Football Nation ranks the league

A power ranking is an editorial judgment, not a standings table. Record begins the process. Opponent quality, recent form, point differential, down to down efficiency, turnovers, red zone execution, pass rush and confirmed availability then change the order. Explosive play context is used when the game evidence supports it, but no uniform explosive play rate is invented where a complete public league table is unavailable.

Tuesday remains early in the Week 5 injury cycle. Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley and Ja'Marr Chase are treated as uncertain rather than ruled in or out. Football Nation's canonical Week 5 injury report will carry the official practice participation and final designation checkpoints.

Football Nation NFL Power Rankings entering Week 5

1. San Francisco 49ers (4 and 0) | Previous: 2 | Up 1

Latest final: Beat Denver 24 to 14. Point differential: plus 58. Strength: The league's only 4 and 0 team leads the public efficiency table at 6.8 yards per play, 57.5 percent on third down and 84.6 percent in the red zone. Concern: Denver held the offense to 24 points, and the short trip to Seattle raises the difficulty immediately. Next opponent: at Seattle.

Football Nation verdict: San Francisco earns No. 1 because its undefeated record, scoring margin and down to down efficiency agree.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (4 and 0) | Previous: 3 | Up 1

Latest final: Beat Las Vegas 30 to 27. Point differential: plus 41. Strength: Kansas City is averaging 29.5 points and 6.5 yards per play while posting a league best tier turnover margin of plus 1.3 per game. Concern: The Raiders pushed the Chiefs to the final possession, so the defense was less controlling than the record suggests. Next opponent: bye.

Football Nation verdict: Kansas City rises one but stays behind San Francisco because the 49ers own the stronger differential and third down profile.

3. Minnesota Vikings (4 and 0) | Previous: 4 | Up 1

Latest final: Beat Miami 15 to 10. Point differential: plus 35. Strength: Minnesota remains unbeaten, owns the league's best sack rate at 10.88 percent and is plus 1.3 turnovers per game. Concern: The offense averages only 21.5 points and needed the defense to protect a low scoring game in Miami. Next opponent: at New Orleans.

Football Nation verdict: The Vikings rise because their defense and possession margin keep traveling even when the offense is ordinary.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars (3 and 1) | Previous: 7 | Up 3

Latest final: Beat Cincinnati 22 to 17. Point differential: plus 51. Strength: Jacksonville is converting 51.1 percent of third downs, 81.8 percent of red zone trips and leads the league at plus 1.5 turnovers per game. Concern: The pass rush is closer to the middle of the league than the turnover rate, which could make the takeaways difficult to sustain. Next opponent: vs. Philadelphia.

Football Nation verdict: Jacksonville owns the strongest one loss profile and has now supported its fast start against a credible Cincinnati offense.

5. Chicago Bears (3 and 1) | Previous: 9 | Up 4

Latest final: Beat the New York Jets 23 to 12. Point differential: plus 47. Strength: Chicago pairs a top three scoring margin with a 47.4 percent third down rate and a 9.17 percent defensive sack rate. Concern: The offense has moved between explosive and uneven stretches, so Green Bay will test whether the floor has risen. Next opponent: at Green Bay.

Football Nation verdict: The Bears move into the top five because three wins and a plus 47 margin now outweigh the remaining volatility.

6. Seattle Seahawks (3 and 1) | Previous: 8 | Up 2

Latest final: Beat the Los Angeles Chargers 30 to 23. Point differential: plus 32. Strength: Seattle has scored at least 30 in three straight games and adds an 8.15 percent sack rate with a positive turnover profile. Concern: The Week 5 opponent is the league's most complete team, and Seattle's 4.9 yards per play in the latest game was modest. Next opponent: vs. San Francisco.

Football Nation verdict: Seattle rises two because the offense keeps finishing drives and the defense created three takeaways against the Chargers.

7. Las Vegas Raiders (3 and 1) | Previous: 5 | Down 2

Latest final: Lost at Kansas City 30 to 27. Point differential: plus 31. Strength: Las Vegas still owns three wins, a plus 31 margin and an 8.70 percent sack rate after taking Kansas City to the final possession. Concern: The offense averages only 5.1 yards per play and the Raiders were minus two in turnovers in the loss. Next opponent: at New England.

Football Nation verdict: The Raiders fall only two because a close road loss to Kansas City is better evidence than a collapse.

8. Buffalo Bills (3 and 1) | Previous: 1 | Down 7

Latest final: Lost to New England 29 to 26. Point differential: plus 20. Strength: Buffalo still leads the league in scoring at 31.8 points per game while producing 6.5 yards per play and converting 53.3 percent of third downs. Concern: The Bills are minus 0.5 turnovers per game and have allowed 107 points, which makes their margin much smaller than the other elite offenses. Next opponent: at Los Angeles Rams.

Football Nation verdict: Buffalo's offense prevents a larger fall, but losing at home to New England removes the basis for No. 1.

9. Baltimore Ravens (3 and 1) | Previous: 6 | Down 3

Latest final: Beat Tennessee 24 to 18. Point differential: plus 20. Strength: Baltimore averages 6.6 yards per play, scores touchdowns on 73.3 percent of red zone trips and remains positive in turnover margin. Concern: Lamar Jackson's ankle is the decisive uncertainty, and the offense was less explosive after he left. Next opponent: at Atlanta.

Football Nation verdict: The Ravens stay in the top ten on overall efficiency, but quarterback availability prevents a higher placement.

10. New York Giants (3 and 1) | Previous: 16 | Up 6

Latest final: Beat Arizona 36 to 24. Point differential: plus 3. Strength: The Giants have three wins, converted 43.4 percent of third downs and are plus 0.8 turnovers per game. Concern: A plus 3 scoring margin is thin for a three win team, and the offense averages only 20.5 points. Next opponent: at Washington.

Football Nation verdict: New York rises six because the record is real, while the modest margin keeps the Giants behind the stronger one loss teams.

11. Cleveland Browns (3 and 1) | Previous: 15 | Up 4

Latest final: Beat Pittsburgh 27 to 24. Point differential: minus 14. Strength: Cleveland owns three wins and a 7.64 percent sack rate after surviving another AFC North game. Concern: The Browns are the only three win team with a negative point differential, so their close game success is carrying the ranking. Next opponent: at New York Jets.

Football Nation verdict: Cleveland rises four for the result, but the minus 14 margin blocks a top ten grade.

12. Atlanta Falcons (2 and 2) | Previous: 22 | Up 10

Latest final: Beat New Orleans 45 to 24. Point differential: plus 4. Strength: Atlanta produced 7.5 yards per play in Week 4 and has scored touchdowns on 80 percent of red zone trips this season. Concern: The four game profile still includes a three point performance, and Week 5 availability on the offensive line and edge remains unsettled. Next opponent: vs. Baltimore.

Football Nation verdict: Atlanta is the week's biggest riser because the New Orleans win combined balance, explosives and red zone finishing.

13. Dallas Cowboys (2 and 2) | Previous: 17 | Up 4

Latest final: Beat Houston 34 to 30. Point differential: plus 10. Strength: Dallas averages 30.5 points, converts 51.0 percent of third downs and scores touchdowns on 81.3 percent of red zone trips. Concern: The defense has allowed 112 points and the turnover margin is even, forcing the offense to keep winning races. Next opponent: vs. Tampa Bay.

Football Nation verdict: Dallas rises because its offensive efficiency is elite, but the defense keeps the Cowboys outside the top ten.

14. Carolina Panthers (2 and 2) | Previous: 18 | Up 4

Latest final: Beat Detroit 32 to 26. Point differential: plus 12. Strength: Carolina averages 30.3 points and 6.1 yards per play, and the Detroit win supplied a quality result against a dangerous offense. Concern: The Panthers convert only 38 percent of third downs, leaving too much pressure on explosive gains and red zone success. Next opponent: bye.

Football Nation verdict: Carolina rises four because the full offense is now producing at a contender's pace.

15. Los Angeles Rams (2 and 2) | Previous: 21 | Up 6

Latest final: Beat Philadelphia 24 to 20. Point differential: plus 2. Strength: The Rams average 6.0 yards per play and convert 43.1 percent of third downs, a strong base for a two win team. Concern: Two losses and a plus 2 margin show that their efficiency has not yet created separation on the scoreboard. Next opponent: vs. Buffalo.

Football Nation verdict: Los Angeles rises six because beating Philadelphia confirms that the offense can convert its yardage against a quality opponent.

16. Cincinnati Bengals (2 and 2) | Previous: 10 | Down 6

Latest final: Lost to Jacksonville 22 to 17. Point differential: plus 12. Strength: Cincinnati still averages 5.7 yards per play, converts 45.3 percent of third downs and owns a 9.03 percent sack rate. Concern: Ja'Marr Chase must clear concussion protocol and Tee Higgins' availability is unresolved, creating a material passing game risk. Next opponent: at Miami.

Football Nation verdict: The Bengals fall six because the loss and receiver uncertainty both reduce their Week 5 floor.

17. Indianapolis Colts (2 and 2) | Previous: 24 | Up 7

Latest final: Beat Washington 30 to 13. Point differential: minus 2. Strength: Indianapolis averages 25.5 points and has scored touchdowns on 75 percent of red zone trips. Concern: A 37.7 percent third down rate and a slightly negative margin leave the offense dependent on finishing a limited number of drives. Next opponent: at Pittsburgh.

Football Nation verdict: The Colts rise seven because the road win was decisive, but the total profile is still closer to the middle than the top.

18. Detroit Lions (2 and 2) | Previous: 13 | Down 5

Latest final: Lost at Carolina 32 to 26. Point differential: minus 8. Strength: Detroit still averages 29.8 points, 5.8 yards per play and an 8.33 percent sack rate. Concern: The Lions have allowed 127 points, the highest total in the league, and cannot keep turning every game into a scoring race. Next opponent: at Arizona.

Football Nation verdict: Detroit falls five because the offense is top tier but the defense remains the league's clearest contender level flaw.

19. Pittsburgh Steelers (2 and 2) | Previous: 12 | Down 7

Latest final: Lost at Cleveland 27 to 24. Point differential: minus 10. Strength: Pittsburgh still creates pressure at an 8.06 percent sack rate and owns two wins. Concern: The offense averages 19.3 points and the negative margin shows that the team has not controlled games. Next opponent: vs. Indianapolis.

Football Nation verdict: The Steelers fall seven because the divisional loss reinforced the limitations already visible in their scoring profile.

20. New England Patriots (2 and 2) | Previous: 27 | Up 7

Latest final: Beat Buffalo 29 to 26. Point differential: minus 12. Strength: New England owns the week's best upset and produced 29 points against the previous No. 1 team. Concern: The season offense still averages 16.3 points, 5.2 yards per play and only 34.6 percent on third down. Next opponent: vs. Las Vegas.

Football Nation verdict: The Patriots rise seven for the quality win, while the four game efficiency baseline prevents an overreaction.

21. Philadelphia Eagles (2 and 2) | Previous: 14 | Down 7

Latest final: Lost to the Los Angeles Rams 24 to 20. Point differential: minus 18. Strength: Philadelphia has two wins and has scored touchdowns on 61.5 percent of red zone trips. Concern: The Eagles average 18.8 points, convert 35.9 percent of third downs and face a short recovery window around Saquon Barkley's hamstring. Next opponent: at Jacksonville.

Football Nation verdict: Philadelphia falls seven because the offense and availability picture both weakened before a difficult trip.

22. Denver Broncos (2 and 2) | Previous: 11 | Down 11

Latest final: Lost at San Francisco 24 to 14. Point differential: minus 20. Strength: Denver has two wins and a 63.6 percent red zone touchdown rate. Concern: The Broncos are minus 20 in scoring margin and did not record a sack in the latest game, limiting their ability to create short fields. Next opponent: at Los Angeles Chargers.

Football Nation verdict: Denver takes the week's largest fall because the efficiency and margin no longer support the previous near top ten placement.

23. Green Bay Packers (2 and 2) | Previous: 26 | Up 3

Latest final: Beat Tampa Bay 17 to 14. Point differential: minus 32. Strength: Green Bay has won two straight and generates sacks on 7.87 percent of opponent pass plays. Concern: The Packers remain minus 32 in scoring margin, and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper's Achilles injury removes an important defender. Next opponent: vs. Chicago.

Football Nation verdict: Green Bay rises three for winning, but the full scoring profile still demands caution.

24. New York Jets (1 and 3) | Previous: 19 | Down 5

Latest final: Lost at Chicago 23 to 12. Point differential: minus 8. Strength: The Jets remain plus 0.8 turnovers per game and have kept their season margin relatively close. Concern: The offense averages 19.0 points and 5.0 yards per play, and produced only 12 points in Chicago. Next opponent: vs. Cleveland.

Football Nation verdict: The Jets fall five because the defense has not received enough offensive help to turn close margins into wins.

25. New Orleans Saints (1 and 3) | Previous: 20 | Down 5

Latest final: Lost to Atlanta 45 to 24. Point differential: minus 23. Strength: New Orleans still averages 26.3 points, converts 50 percent of third downs and scores touchdowns on 80 percent of red zone trips. Concern: The defense has allowed 128 points, and Alvin Kamara's knee is an early Week 5 checkpoint after he returned to the Monday game. Next opponent: vs. Minnesota.

Football Nation verdict: The Saints fall because useful offensive efficiency cannot overcome the league's worst points allowed total.

26. Arizona Cardinals (1 and 3) | Previous: 25 | Down 1

Latest final: Lost to the New York Giants 36 to 24. Point differential: minus 30. Strength: Arizona remains plus 0.8 turnovers per game and owns a 6.84 percent sack rate. Concern: The Cardinals have allowed 117 points, and the loss of Paris Johnson Jr. to a season ending biceps injury compounds the protection problem. Next opponent: vs. Detroit.

Football Nation verdict: Arizona falls one because the takeaways have not stopped opponents from scoring or protected the offense from game pressure.

27. Washington Commanders (1 and 3) | Previous: 23 | Down 4

Latest final: Lost to Indianapolis 30 to 13. Point differential: minus 34. Strength: Washington is plus 0.8 turnovers per game and has shown enough quarterback creation to threaten when the game is close. Concern: The Commanders have allowed 122 points and their offense fell to 13 against Indianapolis. Next opponent: vs. New York Giants.

Football Nation verdict: Washington falls four because the Week 4 result widened both the scoring and divisional gap.

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0 and 4) | Previous: 29 | Up 1

Latest final: Lost at Green Bay 17 to 14. Point differential: minus 20. Strength: Tampa Bay held Green Bay to 17 and stayed within one possession on the road. Concern: The Buccaneers remain winless, average 19.0 points and must manage Antoine Winfield Jr.'s rib injury on a short week. Next opponent: at Dallas.

Football Nation verdict: Tampa Bay rises one only because the competitive loss and defensive effort were better than the other winless profiles.

29. Houston Texans (0 and 4) | Previous: 28 | Down 1

Latest final: Lost to Dallas 34 to 30. Point differential: minus 25. Strength: Houston averages 5.4 yards per play and owns a 9.03 percent sack rate, evidence that the roster is more competitive than the record. Concern: The Texans are winless, convert only 35.2 percent of third downs and have not translated pressure into late game control. Next opponent: at Tennessee.

Football Nation verdict: Houston falls one because another useful offensive game still ended without a win.

30. Tennessee Titans (0 and 4) | Previous: 30 | No change

Latest final: Lost to Baltimore 24 to 18. Point differential: minus 28. Strength: Tennessee kept Baltimore within one score and owns a respectable 6.67 percent sack rate. Concern: The Titans average a league low tier 13.8 points and converted only 20 percent of third downs in the latest game. Next opponent: vs. Houston.

Football Nation verdict: Tennessee stays 30th because the defense competes, but the offense has not created a credible weekly winning formula.

31. Los Angeles Chargers (0 and 4) | Previous: 31 | No change

Latest final: Lost at Seattle 30 to 23. Point differential: minus 39. Strength: The Chargers produce an 8.06 percent sack rate and score touchdowns on 58.3 percent of red zone trips. Concern: They are winless, average 16.8 points, were minus three in turnovers against Seattle and continue to manage Rashawn Slater's high ankle injury. Next opponent: vs. Denver.

Football Nation verdict: The Chargers remain 31st because pressure production has not offset giveaways, protection problems or the scoring deficit.

32. Miami Dolphins (0 and 4) | Previous: 32 | No change

Latest final: Lost to Minnesota 15 to 10. Point differential: minus 55. Strength: Miami held an unbeaten opponent to 15 points, its best defensive showing of the season. Concern: The Dolphins average 11.5 points, own the league's worst scoring margin and converted only 22.2 percent of third downs in Week 4. Next opponent: vs. Cincinnati.

Football Nation verdict: Miami stays last because one defensive improvement does not erase the league's weakest four game scoring profile.

Week 5 pressure points

The top of the list faces immediate confirmation games. San Francisco visits Seattle, Buffalo goes to the Rams, Baltimore visits an Atlanta team that just scored 45 and Chicago goes to Green Bay. Jacksonville hosts Philadelphia with the best turnover margin in the league, while Minnesota takes its defense and pass rush to New Orleans.

The largest Week 4 statement belonged to Atlanta. Football Nation's Falcons 45, Saints 24 recap shows why the Falcons rise ten places: the rushing plan, red zone finishing and response offense were repeatable, even if Baltimore presents a much harder defensive test.
