Pat Freiermuth Questionable vs. Buccaneers: Darnell Washington Fantasy Impact

The Pittsburgh Steelers added tight end Pat Freiermuth to their injury report Saturday with a calf injury and listed him as questionable for Sunday’s road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The timing matters: Freiermuth was not carrying this designation through the normal practice week, so fantasy managers should build a contingency plan without treating him as ruled out.

Pittsburgh did receive one piece of good news. Wide receiver DK Metcalf was removed from the injury report after dealing with an illness and is expected to play. That leaves Freiermuth as the late variable in an offense trying to build on a 34-22 win over Indianapolis.

Why Freiermuth’s status matters

Freiermuth has been one of Aaron Rodgers’ most important scoring-area targets through five games. He is tied for the team lead with 19 receptions and has turned them into 169 yards and a team-best four receiving touchdowns. Two of those scores came against the Colts last week, making the Saturday calf designation especially significant for both Pittsburgh’s red zone plan and fantasy lineups.

This is not simply a question of replacing raw targets. Freiermuth gives Rodgers a trusted middle of the field option and has converted limited yardage into valuable touchdowns. If he is active and the Steelers do not announce a workload restriction, he remains usable as a lower end TE1 or strong TE2. The late soft tissue addition, however, raises more downside than his recent box score suggests.

Darnell Washington becomes the contingency

Darnell Washington is the next tight end on Pittsburgh’s depth chart and the clearest direct beneficiary if Freiermuth cannot play. Washington has 11 catches for 131 yards and one touchdown through five games, averaging 11.9 yards per reception. His size and blocking value can keep him on the field, but fantasy managers should view him as a conditional streamer rather than an automatic top 12 tight end.

If Freiermuth is inactive, Washington becomes a reasonable replacement in deeper leagues and tight end premium formats because a larger route share and more red zone work would be available. Robert Tonyan would also move up the depth chart, but he should remain on fantasy benches unless Pittsburgh signals a larger receiving role.

What it means for Rodgers, Metcalf and Warren

Aaron Rodgers remains playable in favorable formats, but losing the team’s touchdown leader would lower his red zone ceiling. Metcalf’s clearance stabilizes the passing game: he also has 19 catches, producing 225 yards and one touchdown, and should remain the first wide receiver option. Running back Jaylen Warren, who is tied for the team lead with 19 receptions, could absorb additional short area work if Freiermuth sits.

The most likely effect would be distribution rather than one player inheriting every Freiermuth target. Washington can take more tight end routes, Metcalf can command the primary perimeter looks, and Warren can remain involved underneath. That makes Washington a useful contingency while keeping expectations measured.

Fantasy football action plan

Freiermuth managers should keep him in a provisional starting spot but add a replacement before Sunday if their league allows it. Check Pittsburgh’s inactive list about 90 minutes before kickoff. If he is active with no reported limitation, start him with normal late-injury risk. If he is inactive, Washington is the direct pivot; managers with safer established options can still prefer the higher volume player.

Metcalf can be started as planned after being removed from the report. Washington should only move into lineups if Freiermuth is inactive or credible pregame reporting points to a restricted role. The key is to react to confirmed Sunday information rather than assuming Saturday’s questionable tag guarantees either outcome.
