Week 6 Start Em Sit Em: Six Lineup Decisions That Actually Matter

6 min read

Start Jordan Love over Bo Nix, prioritize Woody Marks if David Montgomery remains unavailable, and choose Brenton Strange over Evan Engram when you need catches instead of a rescue touchdown. Those are Football Nation's clearest borderline decisions entering Week 6. The harder part is knowing when to reverse them. This guide gives you the evidence, the strongest objection and a usable fallback at every position.

Information cutoff: October 14, 2026 at 9:56 AM Central. Statistics cover completed games through Week 5. Recommendations are FN analysis for a 12 team league starting one quarterback, with half PPR scoring, four points per passing touchdown, minus two per interception, one point per 25 passing yards and one per 10 rushing or receiving yards. Standard scoring removes reception points; full PPR awards one per catch. Defense and kicker settings vary, so no platform score is assumed.

Cincinnati, Detroit, Miami and Minnesota are on bye. Move their players out of active slots now, but do not drop a valuable starter merely to solve a one week shortage. [S1]

Quarterback: Love's improvement is more useful than Nix's team victory

Love threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns against Chicago. Green Bay hosts Dallas Sunday night. [S2] [S19] The case is not that last week's total repeats; it is that his offense just demonstrated more than one route to explosive production. FN prefers Love when replacing a bye quarterback or choosing between him and a struggling starter.

Nix won at the Chargers but passed for 123 yards. His five games contain only one with multiple passing touchdowns, and his season rushing yardage totals just 35, calculated from Denver's official log. [S3] That is not the rushing cushion many managers associate with his name. The objection: one rushing touchdown can overturn this choice, and Seattle's defensive injuries matter. Keep Nix in superflex when the alternative is not a starting quarterback. For one QB, prefer Love, subject to Friday availability and Sunday warmups.

Running back: Marks offers a workload argument; Harvey needs a new one

Marks had 15 carries for 62 yards and four receptions for 23 yards in Week 5. His preceding three games contained six, five and eight carries. [S4] Reporter Aaron Wilson attributes a week to week groin assessment to DeMeco Ryans for Montgomery and reports an expanded Marks role. That is reporting, not a final Sunday designation. [S5] Houston faces Jacksonville at Wembley on Sunday at 8:30 AM Central. [S6]

FN considers Marks a usable second running back if Montgomery is absent, especially in PPR. Four receptions support a floor that an empty rushing line does not. The objection is real: opportunity does not guarantee efficient blocking or a touchdown. Harvey had only three carries for seven yards last week, while J.K. Dobbins received 18 carries. [S7] Bench Harvey when a confirmed lead option is available. If Montgomery returns, reduce Marks to a flex decision; Emanuel Wilson is an alternative only after Thursday's Seattle backfield and inactive news is settled.

Receiver: Bernard's current opportunity beats Kupp's old reputation

Bernard's official Pittsburgh log shows six catches for 80 yards against Indianapolis, after just three catches combined in Weeks 3 and 4. Pittsburgh visits Tampa Bay Sunday. [S8] [S18] Michael Pittman Jr. went on injured reserve October 10, so this is a genuine roster opening rather than a hopeful injury rumor. [S20] FN considers Bernard a third receiver or flex, not a permanent breakout. Check his own availability and whether Pittsburgh retains that larger role.

Kupp has three catches for 28 yards across his last two games. [S9] With JSN active, FN prefers Bernard over Kupp for a third receiver or flex opening because Bernard has demonstrated the stronger current receiving involvement. FN also would not start Kupp over a healthy Christian Watson, whose current Green Bay log shows 26 catches, 474 yards and six touchdowns through five games. [S10] The strongest objection is an absent JSN changing Seattle's distribution. Even then, missing volume has to go somewhere, but not necessarily entirely to Kupp. If JSN is inactive, Kupp becomes a deeper PPR consideration; do not turn that conditional scenario into a Wednesday guarantee.

Tight end: Strange has repeated the volume that Engram has not

Strange followed seven catches for 95 yards with seven for 68. Those consecutive games produced 163 receiving yards without a touchdown. [S11] FN prefers that repeatable receiving base to a player who needs the end zone to rescue his week. He is a practical substitute during the bye crunch, provided the final injury report does not introduce a limitation.

Engram's four catches for 55 yards last week were encouraging, but his previous three games produced two catches for 23 yards combined. [S12] The objection is Denver finding a sustainable answer through him after Sean Payton reassumed play calling before Week 5. [S13] That deserves monitoring, not blind extrapolation. In full PPR, the receiving distinction favors Strange further. In standard scoring, either can disappoint without a touchdown. Reconsider after Friday's Jacksonville report or a documented change in Engram's routes, not after a generic optimism quote.

Defense: avoid confusing last week's opponent with this week's

Seattle is FN's preference over Houston for this specific comparison. Nix's current passing production gives the Seahawks a plausible route to stalled drives, while Jacksonville generated 408 net yards against Philadelphia last week. [S3] [S14] That does not make Houston's defense bad; it makes chasing its Tennessee result a different proposition against Jacksonville.

Seattle's objection is availability: its Tuesday report listed Leonard Williams limited and Drake Thomas as a nonparticipant, both estimated participation. [S15] Check Wednesday's final report. In a format with severe points or yardage penalties, prioritize stability. In a sack and turnover driven format, accept more variance. Do not project a defensive touchdown, and do not permanently cut Houston solely because FN prefers another unit for one game.

Kicker: prefer an established attempt path to a rebound bet

Myers made five field goals against San Francisco, including one from 50 yards. [S16] FN prefers him over Smack, whose official Green Bay log shows one make on three attempts and two successful extra points on three tries in Week 5. [S17] This is not a prediction that Myers gets five more opportunities or that Smack keeps missing.

Smack's counterargument is a productive Green Bay offense creating chances. Myers' risk is Thursday wind or Seattle finishing drives with touchdowns instead. Review the latest venue forecast before Thursday kickoff and verify both kickers still hold their jobs. If your rules penalize missed kicks, Smack's recent performance deserves more weight. Never spend a premium bench spot holding two ordinary kickers to protect a tiny projected edge.

The FN lineup rule

A start recommendation is a comparison, not a promise. Put Thursday players in their dedicated position when possible and preserve your flex slot for the latest available game. Resolve London decisions before Sunday's 8:30 AM Central kickoff, then revisit Sunday night choices only with a legitimate replacement available. Favor verified participation over yesterday's fantasy score. The winning Week 6 adjustment is using new roles without pretending Wednesday has already answered Friday's injury questions.
