D.J. Moore Injury Update: AC Joint Report, Bills Week 3 Outlook

Updated September 18, 2026. Confirmed: DJ Moore is a Buffalo Bills wide receiver, and he left Thursday night’s 41–31 win over Detroit after landing hard on his left shoulder while diving for a pass in the end zone. Reported: NFL.com reported Friday that Moore is believed to have an AC joint sprain and his Week 3 availability against the Los Angeles Chargers is uncertain. Adam Schefter separately reported the injury is not considered serious and Moore is not expected to miss significant time. Football Nation analysis: Buffalo has enough depth to survive a short absence, but Moore’s high value targets would have to be redistributed rather than replaced by one player.

What happened to DJ Moore

Moore was injured with under three minutes remaining in the second quarter against Detroit. He attempted a diving catch in the end zone and landed on his left shoulder and collarbone area. He was helped to the locker room for X rays. Reuters reported the game broadcast initially raised the possibility of a stinger. On Friday, NFL.com’s league news roundup reported that the current belief is an AC joint sprain and that Moore’s Week 3 status is uncertain.

Buffalo has not announced a long term absence or an injured reserve move. The current public information supports a Week 3 availability question, not a multiweek timetable. Until the Bills publish practice participation and a final game designation, a more precise return date would be speculation.

Moore had already changed Buffalo’s passing game

In the season opener at Houston, Moore caught five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown on eight targets, including a 43 yard score from Josh Allen. Football Nation’s Bills 36, Texans 31 recap shows how Moore and Dalton Kincaid supplied explosive receiving production in a game Buffalo won by five.

Moore did not record a catch against Detroit before leaving and had one rushing attempt for minus one yard. The Bills still won 41–31 behind five total touchdowns from Allen. According to Reuters’ game report, Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns and added two rushing scores. James Cook III ran for 135 yards and a touchdown. Kincaid caught seven passes for 95 yards and a score.

Who benefits if Moore misses Week 3

Kincaid is the clearest short term beneficiary because his role was already substantial before Moore left. That does not mean every Moore target becomes a Kincaid target. Buffalo can move Khalil Shakir around the formation, ask Joshua Palmer to handle more perimeter work and use Cook to keep the offense efficient on early downs.

Football Nation’s Lions vs. Bills Week 2 preview identified Allen, Kincaid and Moore as the explosive passing core entering Thursday. The final result strengthened the Allen and Kincaid portion of that picture while Moore’s injury creates the first real test of Buffalo’s receiver depth.

Fantasy football impact

Moore should not be dropped. The current report says the injury is not considered serious, and his 100 yard Week 1 performance showed immediate ceiling in Buffalo. Fantasy managers should treat him as a Week 3 injury monitor until the Bills publish practice participation and a final designation.

Kincaid remains a strong starting tight end and gains additional target upside if Moore sits. Shakir becomes more attractive in PPR formats because extra short and intermediate work could raise his reception floor. Palmer is the more volatile option because his fantasy value depends on route share and explosive opportunities. Allen’s value changes very little after Buffalo scored 41 points despite losing Moore before halftime.

What matters next

The next useful evidence is Buffalo’s official practice report. A receiver can return to practice before he is ready for a normal workload, so participation level and the final game designation matter more than speculation early in the week. If Moore sits, Buffalo’s best answer is not to force one receiver into his exact role. It is to preserve spacing and spread high value touches among Kincaid, Shakir, Palmer and Cook.

The bigger Bills picture

Buffalo is 2–0 after wins over Houston and Detroit. The offense has now won two different kinds of games: a back and forth Week 1 finish and a Week 2 game in which the Bills jumped ahead 21–0 and forced Detroit to chase. That versatility is encouraging. Moore’s injury is the first significant test of whether the receiving group can maintain it if one of its primary pieces is unavailable.

Football Nation takeaway

Confirmed facts: Moore left the Detroit game with a shoulder injury and is currently a Buffalo Bill. Reported information: NFL.com reports the injury is believed to be an AC joint sprain and Week 3 is uncertain; Schefter reports it is not considered serious and Moore is not expected to miss significant time. Statistical interpretation: Kincaid’s seven catch, 95 yard night and Cook’s 135 rushing yards show Buffalo already has multiple ways to replace lost offensive volume. Football Nation analysis: the Bills should distribute Moore’s work instead of asking one receiver to imitate his role.
