NFL Power Rankings After Week 5: 49ers Stay No. 1, Lions Surge
Football Nation Week 6 power rankings
San Francisco remains No. 1 after surviving Seattle, while Minnesota stays unbeaten and Kansas City slips one place only because the Vikings added another complete win. The largest moves belong to Detroit, New England and Green Bay. Each produced the kind of Week 5 performance that changes the shape of a ranking instead of merely improving a record.
This is a catch up edition with a firm factual cutoff. Records, results and team metrics were checked Friday, October 16, 2026 at 4:03 PM Central, but the ranking itself is frozen after the Buffalo and Los Angeles Rams final on Monday, October 12. Denver beat Seattle 17 to 14 on Thursday, October 15 after that cutoff. That Week 6 final is identified below but is not used to reorder this list. It will count in the next edition.
Football Nation ranks current team quality, not only record. The order weighs opponent quality, recent form, point differential, offensive efficiency, third down and red zone performance, turnover margin, pass rush and the ability to create or prevent explosive plays. Injury effects are included only when confirmed by an official report. No unsupported availability assumption is used here, and every Week 6 matchup still requires a final game day injury check.
1. San Francisco 49ers (5 and 0) | Previous: 1 | No change
Latest final: San Francisco 32, Seattle 29. The 49ers own a plus 61 point differential, score 30.8 points per game, gain 6.4 yards per play and lead this data set with a 51.9 percent third down rate. Their 87.5 percent red zone touchdown rate keeps good drives from becoming empty production. The concern is that Seattle scored 29 and stayed alive into the final minutes. Next: Washington on Monday night. Football Nation verdict: the most complete resume keeps San Francisco first.
2. Minnesota Vikings (5 and 0) | Previous: 3 | Up 1
Latest final: Minnesota 23, New Orleans 13. The Vikings reached the bye unbeaten with a plus 45 point differential, a plus 1.2 turnover margin per game and a 9.83 percent sack rate. That combination lets Minnesota win even when the offense is not chasing a shootout. The concern is whether the passing game can create enough explosives if a stronger opponent protects the ball. Next: Week 6 bye. Football Nation verdict: unbeaten balance earns the move to second.
3. Kansas City Chiefs (4 and 0) | Previous: 2 | Down 1
Latest final before the Week 5 bye: Kansas City 30, Las Vegas 27. The Chiefs entered the break with a plus 41 point differential, 29.5 points per game, 6.5 yards per play and a league best plus 1.3 turnover margin per game. The concern is that the Raiders pushed them to the final possession, and the bye offered no new result to answer that question. Next: Los Angeles Chargers. Football Nation verdict: still an elite team, just one spot behind Minnesota's active unbeaten resume.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars (4 and 1) | Previous: 4 | No change
Latest final: Jacksonville 19, Philadelphia 17. Jacksonville is plus 53 through five games, owns a plus 1.0 turnover margin per game and converts 45.9 percent of third downs. The Jaguars won a road game without needing their best scoring output, which is a valuable sign. The concern is that 19 points leaves little margin when the takeaway edge disappears. Next: Houston. Football Nation verdict: the defense and possession profile hold the Jaguars in the top four.
5. Buffalo Bills (4 and 1) | Previous: 8 | Up 3
Latest final: Buffalo 37, Los Angeles Rams 34. Buffalo leads the tracked field at 6.7 yards per play and shares the scoring lead at 32.8 points per game. The offense can erase mistakes faster than almost anyone. The concern is a minus 0.8 turnover margin per game and a defense that allowed 34 in the Monday night win. Next: Las Vegas. Football Nation verdict: overwhelming efficiency moves Buffalo into the top five, but ball security keeps the Bills below the unbeaten teams.
6. Baltimore Ravens (4 and 1) | Previous: 9 | Up 3
Latest final: Baltimore 30, Atlanta 23. The Ravens are plus 27, average 29.2 points and 6.4 yards per play, and finish 73.7 percent of red zone trips with touchdowns. That profile gives Baltimore several ways to win. The concern is that Atlanta stayed within one score and repeatedly tested the defense. Next: Cleveland. Football Nation verdict: another balanced win makes Baltimore a clear contender.
7. Detroit Lions (3 and 2) | Previous: 18 | Up 11
Latest final: Detroit 45, Arizona 21. Detroit shares the league scoring lead at 32.8 points per game, converts 77.3 percent of red zone trips into touchdowns and posts an 8.58 percent sack rate. The blowout finally aligned the record with the team's ceiling. The concern is a plus 16 point differential that still reflects earlier inconsistency. Next: Week 6 bye. Football Nation verdict: the strongest surge of the week puts Detroit back in the top ten.
8. New England Patriots (3 and 2) | Previous: 20 | Up 12
Latest final: New England 45, Las Vegas 17. The Patriots now carry a plus 16 point differential and average 5.8 yards per play. The Week 5 rout paired explosive scoring with defensive control and followed a road win at Buffalo, so this is more than a one game bump. The concern is whether that level can hold against a familiar divisional opponent. Next: New York Jets. Football Nation verdict: two high quality wins demand a major correction upward.
9. Green Bay Packers (3 and 2) | Previous: 23 | Up 14
Latest final: Green Bay 31, Chicago 7. The Packers average 5.6 yards per play and produce an 8.19 percent sack rate. The defense controlled the rivalry game while the offense finished drives, the clearest complete performance in this part of the ranking. The concern is that Green Bay still has a minus 8 point differential because of earlier losses. Next: Dallas. Football Nation verdict: the largest climb belongs to a team whose current form looks far better than its season start.
10. Cincinnati Bengals (3 and 2) | Previous: 16 | Up 6
Latest final: Cincinnati 31, Miami 24. Cincinnati owns a plus 19 point differential, converts 50 percent of third downs and posts a 9.19 percent sack rate. Sustaining drives and affecting the quarterback is a reliable formula. The concern is that the latest win came against a winless Miami team and still required four quarters. Next: Week 6 bye. Football Nation verdict: Cincinnati enters its break with a credible top ten case.
11. Seattle Seahawks (3 and 2) | Previous: 6 | Down 5
Latest final at the ranking cutoff: San Francisco 32, Seattle 29. Seattle remained plus 29 after pushing the No. 1 team, averages 24.7 points and owns an 8.16 percent sack rate. The concern is closing games against the best opponents. Next at the cutoff: Denver. Week 6 checkpoint: Denver beat Seattle 17 to 14 on Thursday after this ranking was frozen, so that result will be included next week. Football Nation verdict: the 49ers loss was competitive, but the ranking must reflect a missed chance.
12. Pittsburgh Steelers (3 and 2) | Previous: 19 | Up 7
Latest final: Pittsburgh 34, Indianapolis 22. The Steelers moved above .500 and restored a positive point differential at plus 2. Their plus 0.4 turnover margin per game supports an offense that did enough with short fields and scoring opportunities. The concern is the thin overall margin after five games. Next: Tampa Bay. Football Nation verdict: a convincing win returns Pittsburgh to the upper middle tier.
13. Denver Broncos (3 and 2) | Previous: 22 | Up 9
Latest final at the ranking cutoff: Denver 23, Los Angeles Chargers 17. Denver carried a minus 14 point differential but a plus 0.7 turnover margin per game and a 7.69 percent sack rate. The defense gave the team a stable weekly path. The concern is that the negative differential showed how narrow that path had been. Next at the cutoff: Seattle. Week 6 checkpoint: Denver won 17 to 14 on Thursday after this list was frozen. Football Nation verdict: the Week 5 win justified the rise, and the later Seattle result will strengthen next week's case.
14. Las Vegas Raiders (3 and 2) | Previous: 7 | Down 7
Latest final: New England 45, Las Vegas 17. The Raiders still average 26.4 points and generate a 7.51 percent sack rate, but their point differential fell to plus 3. The concern is obvious: the defense and game control disappeared in a 28 point defeat. Next: Buffalo. Football Nation verdict: Las Vegas stays in the middle because the earlier body of work matters, but the Patriots loss removed its top ten standing.
15. Chicago Bears (3 and 2) | Previous: 5 | Down 10
Latest final: Green Bay 31, Chicago 7. Chicago remains plus 23, converts 43.7 percent of third downs and produces an 8.45 percent sack rate. Those season numbers keep the Bears from a deeper fall. The concern is an offense that scored only seven in its first major reality check. Next: Atlanta. Football Nation verdict: Chicago still has defensive tools, but the top five case is gone.
16. New York Giants (3, 1 and 1) | Previous: 10 | Down 6
Latest final: New York 27, Washington 27. The Giants are plus 3 and convert 44.3 percent of third downs, enough to support a winning record. The concern is that they failed to finish a home game against a one win opponent and settled for a tie. Next: New Orleans. Football Nation verdict: the record is solid, but the Week 5 result exposed a lower floor.
17. Carolina Panthers (2 and 2) | Previous: 14 | Down 3
Latest final before the Week 5 bye: Carolina 32, Detroit 26. Carolina averages 30.3 points, gains 6.1 yards per play and carries a plus 0.8 turnover margin per game. That is a potent early efficiency profile. The concern is sample size and whether the offense will retain its rhythm after the break. Next: Philadelphia. Football Nation verdict: Carolina stays ahead of several teams with more games because its best football has been legitimately explosive.
18. Los Angeles Rams (2 and 3) | Previous: 15 | Down 3
Latest final: Buffalo 37, Los Angeles Rams 34. The Rams average 6.0 yards per play and score touchdowns on 65 percent of red zone trips. They can threaten elite defenses and nearly stole the Monday night game. The concern is a minus 1 point differential and a minus 0.6 turnover margin per game. Next: Arizona. Football Nation verdict: strong offensive evidence prevents a steep drop, but close losses still count.
19. Atlanta Falcons (2 and 3) | Previous: 12 | Down 7
Latest final: Baltimore 30, Atlanta 23. The Falcons average 5.8 yards per play, convert 41.7 percent of third downs and score touchdowns on 69.2 percent of red zone trips. The concern is a minus 3 point differential and a defense that could not get the late stop. Next: Chicago. Football Nation verdict: Atlanta has enough offense to rebound, but Week 5 moved it below the break even line.
20. Dallas Cowboys (2 and 3) | Previous: 13 | Down 7
Latest final: Tampa Bay 24, Dallas 16. Dallas averages 27.6 points, converts 49.2 percent of third downs and owns an 83.3 percent red zone touchdown rate. Those are top tier drive numbers. The concern is a minus 0.6 turnover margin per game and an offense that produced only 16 against a one win opponent. Next: Green Bay. Football Nation verdict: the ceiling remains high, but the weekly floor is too low for the top half.
21. New York Jets (2 and 3) | Previous: 24 | Up 3
Latest final: New York 17, Cleveland 12. The Jets moved to minus 3 in point differential, post a 9.60 percent sack rate and own a plus 0.6 turnover margin per game. The defense can create a repeatable path to close wins. The concern is an offense that still managed only 17. Next: New England. Football Nation verdict: the Jets rise because they won their kind of game, but they need more scoring to climb further.
22. Philadelphia Eagles (2 and 3) | Previous: 21 | Down 1
Latest final: Jacksonville 19, Philadelphia 17. Philadelphia scores touchdowns on 64.3 percent of red zone trips, but the overall point differential has fallen to minus 20 and the turnover margin is minus 0.4 per game. The concern is that good situational flashes are not becoming complete wins. Next: Carolina. Football Nation verdict: the Eagles remain dangerous but have not earned a higher placement.
23. Cleveland Browns (3 and 2) | Previous: 11 | Down 12
Latest final: New York Jets 17, Cleveland 12. Cleveland produces an 8.38 percent sack rate, yet the offense left the defense with almost no margin and the season point differential dropped to minus 19. The concern is scoring consistency against even average opposition. Next: Baltimore. Football Nation verdict: the winning record matters, but current performance forces the largest fall among teams above .500.
24. Indianapolis Colts (2 and 3) | Previous: 17 | Down 7
Latest final: Pittsburgh 34, Indianapolis 22. Indianapolis scores touchdowns on 66.7 percent of red zone trips but owns a minus 14 point differential. The offense can finish some drives, while the defense has not kept games within a manageable script. Next: Tennessee. Football Nation verdict: a favorable opponent offers a rebound chance, but the Colts first need a complete game.
25. Washington Commanders (1, 3 and 1) | Previous: 27 | Up 2
Latest final: Washington 27, New York Giants 27. The Commanders own a plus 1.0 turnover margin per game, one of the best possession profiles in the league, but their point differential is minus 34. The tie showed resilience without solving the larger efficiency problem. Next: San Francisco on Monday night. Football Nation verdict: Washington moves up for competing on the road, not because its season weaknesses disappeared.
26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1 and 4) | Previous: 28 | Up 2
Latest final: Tampa Bay 24, Dallas 16. The Buccaneers finally converted competitive stretches into a win and improved their point differential to minus 12. The concern is a minus 0.4 turnover margin per game and four losses that still define the season. Next: Pittsburgh. Football Nation verdict: the Dallas win earns movement, but Tampa Bay needs another result before leaving the lower tier.
27. Houston Texans (1 and 4) | Previous: 29 | Up 2
Latest final: Houston 26, Tennessee 3. Houston owns a 9.23 percent sack rate and a plus 0.6 turnover margin per game, and the first win pulled its point differential to minus 2. The concern is opponent quality because Tennessee remains winless. Next: Jacksonville. Football Nation verdict: the defense gives Houston a real upset path, but the Jaguars are a much harder test.
28. New Orleans Saints (1 and 4) | Previous: 25 | Down 3
Latest final: Minnesota 23, New Orleans 13. New Orleans converts 45.8 percent of third downs and has scored touchdowns on 81.3 percent of red zone trips, but too few drives reach that area and the point differential is minus 33. The concern is basic offensive volume. Next: New York Giants. Football Nation verdict: situational efficiency cannot offset a sustained lack of scoring opportunities.
29. Arizona Cardinals (1 and 4) | Previous: 26 | Down 3
Latest final: Detroit 45, Arizona 21. Arizona owns a plus 0.4 turnover margin per game, but the season point differential collapsed to minus 54 after the blowout. The concern is whether the defense can prevent explosive plays long enough for the offense to stay on schedule. Next: Los Angeles Rams. Football Nation verdict: the turnover profile offers hope, while the scoreboard evidence forces a drop.
30. Los Angeles Chargers (0 and 5) | Previous: 31 | Up 1
Latest final: Denver 23, Los Angeles Chargers 17. The Chargers stayed close but fell to a minus 45 point differential and remain the only winless team above the final two spots. The concern is finishing: competitive stretches have not become a complete fourth quarter. Next: Kansas City. Football Nation verdict: the Chargers edge upward only because the teams below them own even worse scoring profiles.
31. Miami Dolphins (0 and 5) | Previous: 32 | Up 1
Latest final: Cincinnati 31, Miami 24. Miami produced 24 points but remains minus 62 overall with a minus 0.8 turnover margin per game. The concern is that every mistake compounds a defense already playing from difficult field position. Next: Week 6 bye. Football Nation verdict: the Dolphins leave last place by one spot, but the break must produce structural improvement.
32. Tennessee Titans (0 and 5) | Previous: 30 | Down 2
Latest final: Houston 26, Tennessee 3. Tennessee is minus 51 and scored only three points against a previously winless opponent. The concern is both drive creation and the lack of explosive answers when the game script turns negative. Next: Indianapolis. Football Nation verdict: no team had a weaker Week 5 result, so Tennessee falls to No. 32.
What changed most
Detroit, New England and Green Bay made the strongest positive moves because their Week 5 wins combined margin, efficiency and opponent context. Cleveland, Chicago and Las Vegas fell hardest because each loss challenged a central part of its earlier ranking case. The most important Week 6 tests are Buffalo at Las Vegas, Dallas at Green Bay, Baltimore at Cleveland and Washington at San Francisco.
Football Nation conclusion
San Francisco remains the standard because its undefeated record is supported by the best point differential and elite drive efficiency. Minnesota is the cleanest challenger, while Kansas City, Jacksonville, Buffalo and Baltimore form the next championship tier. The ranking will change when Week 6 is complete, especially after the Denver result already logged Thursday and the remaining Sunday and Monday games.
